Pain and Sciatica |
|
You are highly likely to have back pain
at some point in your life as 80% of the
population get it regularly. |
| When
dealing with your pain it is important
to identify which joint is injured and
overworked or sprained, and which is stiff.
If the lowest joints are painful, it is
usually because they have been injured.
In these cases it is better to calm them
down with ice, use acupuncture and soft-tissue
release techniques to reduce spasm and
improve the control of the muscles through
active rehabilitation to strengthen the
weakened muscles rather than manipulate
the joint by twisting the spine and applying
a push. |
| This
helps to settle the inflammation and ease
the pain at the base of the spine. It
is also necessary to improve mobility
of the hips using mobilisation as well
as mobility of the upper lumbar and lower
thoracic spine to reduce the strain lower
down using mobilisation and manipulation.
|
| After
14 years of practice and 7 years teaching,
I understand the need to create stability
at the base of the spine and therefore
tend to reduce the amount of twisting
type adjustments that are given. This
reduces the risk of soreness or other
side effects of treatment. |
| Too
much twisting could put you at an increased
risk of further injury in the acute stages
of treatment, I do not take that risk,
but allow your joints to heal by reducing
the stress on them and specifically re-training
the muscles around them. |
| You
may have heard differing stories on the
effectiveness of treatments, it is always
worth bearing in mind that some methods
will help most people, some will unfortunately
hurt a minority of people, it is not a
one size fits all story. The key to great
treatment is identifying which joint has
been overworked, this is where the treatment
at Back In Form aims to excel. |
